Well, I know it's been a while since my last post, and for that I am sorry. Much has happened these past couple weeks. First, I must tell you our first situations when coming here. Oh, looking back now, it was quite adventurous and laugh-worthy. For those who think of me as a city girl (which in some ways I am), I think I can say that I've grown in my roughness of nature, so to speak. Our apartment in student housing that we are now moved into, wasn't available until a week ago. The first week we got here was spent at a small hotel owned by the University of Iceland. Then we had to move because it was being converted into student dorms for the year. Where were we going to stay? Well seeing as five-star hotels were out of the question, Mom and us kids taxied our things to some public camping grounds in Reykavik, set up our tent, and created our own little home. Through rain and cold nights, we survived the week. By Saturday, the lot of us were dead tired of Iceland winds beating against our fabric walls and puddled floors from the wet weather. Oh how glad we were to have a heated place! But it was one of the many adventures that make up our trip. Without some stories to tell, where would I be? Boring, I tell ya, boring as stone.
We moved in on the first of September and the apartment is simple and sunny. At first it was quite empty with bare white walls and no furniture, but as I was unpacking my things into my new room, it started to feel a little bit like a home. Of course it'll never be my real home, my hearts always with good ol' Canada and its hockey and normal seasons, but it feels as much like home as it can get. Finally we had a kitchen to cook in and closets to place our clothes. Where we're living is a nice, quaint place, filled with families. There's free washing machines and a study room to go and work in.
Yesterday we bought a used black leather couch, and oh how that was a humorous time. This guy that was selling it, well we'd called him before, trying to set up when to get it. He was a little rough with his English, but after some time, he said he'd bring it to our door that night. That was at around 10pm or something of the sort. Well, after an a half, we decided he'd stood us up. Then, just as I was about to doze off, the guy called saying he was there. We met him at the end of our driveway, payed him, then Kai, Mom and I hauled the stinking thing up to the second floor. Oh it was a laugh. I'd never thought in my life I'd find myself buying and carrying a couch at the wee hours of the morning. But the guy and his wife weren't as odd as I'd thought, and the couch we're sure enjoying.
At school, I only attend my Icelandic class and extra-curricular class, which in this case is rama. I'm learning much about their language and each day I learn something new. It's a pain-in-the-butt, Icelandic is, but I'd rather know a little than know none at all. Soon enough I'll be jabbering about like an idiot with the rest of 'em (lol). Ohhh well, it's pretty boring in the acadamy department, but any time now, my online courses from back home will be starting and then I can put the fine brain God's given me to good use. :)
That's it for now, my fellow followers,
