Ok, I haven't posted much in the past two weeks as my studies have been very demanding; exams and presentations seem like a constant. Instead of complaining, I like to think of it as a privilege for the opportunity to learn these mind-prying-open things. Topics in glaciology, glacial geology, volcanology, life in the universe and geothermal energy. It is way too much to share, although I'm sure if I started explaining how I see a glacier as a moving river of ice in a mathematical equation it may take some of the 'romance' out of it heehee. I must say the more i learn of landforms created by glaciers I am beginning to be aware of my home province of Alberta and British Columbia in new ways, since glaciers carved out the landscapes we see there today. The processes to form the bumps and shapes of the land all give answers to history of thickness & velocity of ice, sediments, temperature and so many details. Today, I did a group presentation on Flutes, a dynamic glacial landform - the rest of my group were all from France, to make it more interesting. On Thursday, my group presentation is on how scientists measure mass balance of glaciers, from satelite remote sensing to hydrological methods done on the ground. The ability for satelites to measure a mere centimetre of difference in glacier or land movement helps scientists to understand glaciers, volcanoes, and other areas of study important to earth science. The more I learn, the more it's pretty clear how normal it is for the Earth's natural cycles to warm and cool, there have been over 30 glaciations and cooling/warming periods in the not-too-distant geological past - I think the climate change media may be hype, but that's just my thought on it. The following are a few things I shared in a glaciology media class, much lighter material than physics and math. Hope you like them, too!
